Number of Pages: 38

This manual is a Revised Edition and a compilation of a few different South Bend parts manuals, books, and bulletins that we have collected over 10 years. We put this manual together to simplify many of the changes South Bend made to their lathes during the early years of their production. This manual is to be the best comprehensive parts manual to cover 9″-24″ lathes manufactured between 1906 and the late 30’s.

South Bend made a lot of changes during this time, and parts would overlap from different models. This manual is for the 9″, 11″,13″, 14″, 15″, 16″, 16/14″, and 24″ lathes, series include O, N, R, and T as well as the 9″ “Junior”, and “Workshop” lathes. South Bend did make some custom designs that had short runs that may not be covered in the manual or any manual that exist for that matter.

This manual contains cross-sectional diagrams as well as pictorial views of the parts. It covers all the different parts of the lathe as well as the many different drive systems that were available.

Here are just some of the lathes and configurations covered in this manual:

Early South Bend Lathes Manuals

Gear Box:

Some of the lathes made for the time frame covered by this manual were made without gear boxes for threading, but some did have a gear box. Below is a picture of the gear box that was used in this time frame.

Please Note:

We have three different manuals that cover three different configurations and vintages of “Heavy” South Bend Lathes. Some of the manuals overlap on certain machines and parts, because South Bend didn’t change every machine and part at precise times, but I can help you match the appropriate manual with your machine. Below is an explanation of the three different manuals. If you have any questions about a manual, please let us know.

Overview:

I have collected this information for many years and have found the information they contain to be priceless in using and setting up the machines properly. I believe this manual will be a valuable resource of knowledge that will provide a lot of helpful information that is often hard to find. My manuals are not photocopies. I maintain a high standard of quality in my reproductions. Most of the manuals I reproduce look better than their originals. I have professionally digitally edited every page, and removed stains, wrinkles and handwriting. All of the manuals are printed on thick white paper to withstand shop wear and tear, which is better than a low resolution pdf download.
